Breast and Cervical Cancer continue to be the leading causes of death in India.
Despite going through the covid 19 pandemic, cancer screening has become the need of the hour following WHO call for action for cervical cancer elimination by 2030.
The efforts to bring down the incidence of these cancers need to be expedited.
Keeping this in mind, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology under aegis of ISCCP and AOGD conducted Cancer Screening Week between 8-12th March 2021 in the opd. Dr Saritha Shamsunder, Professor & consultant, VMMC and Safdarjung Hospital, and President ISCCP was the organizing chairperson, assisted by Dr Sheeba Marwah and Dr Archana Mishra. The screening week was inaugurated on international Women’s Day 8/3/21 by the Medical Superintendent, of the institute Dr SV Arya Safdarjung Hospital in a very heavily attended inaugural function in the Opd itself. Principal VMMC Dr Rajkapoor was the guest of honor. The inaugural function was graced by all additional MS, Nursing Superintendent and Head of Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Dr Anjali Dabral, besides Senior faculty Dr Pratima Mittal, Dr Sunita Malik, Dr Vijay Zutshi, Dr Rupali Dewan, Dr Renu Arora and young gynecologists of the Deptt, besides OPD nursing officers, staff, guards and technicians. Throughout the week around 200 ladies were screened in GOPD, amongst which 54 were health care workers including doctors nursing officers, sai workers and security guards. The screening was done by Residents of the department.
In order to promulgate awareness and encourage workers and patients towards importance of screening procedures, parallel cultural activities were conducted. On the first day, a poster making competition was held amongst second year nursing students on Cervical and breast cancer screening in India. On the second day, a slogan competition was held wherein all nursing staff and orderly participated whereas poem competition was held on the theme topic on third day.
A valedictory function was held on 11th March to award the winners for all the competitions, judged by senior faculty of Obstetrics and Gynecology deptt throughout the week.
The event received wide accolades across the hospital witnessing enthusiastic participation by all female staff.
