Oral antihyperglycemic drugs are increasingly being prescribed instead of insulin for women with gestational diabetes. In the largest trial to date comparing glyburide and insulin in this population, the overall frequency of the composite outcome of macrosomia, neonatal hypoglycemia, or hyperbilirubinemia was similar in both treatment groups, but maternal and neonatal hypoglycemia rates were higher in the glyburide group.
International Regulators continue to recommend insulin rather than an oral antihyperglycemic drug for glucose control in women with gestational diabetes.
